We're smack-dab in the middle of winter. The coldest season is upon us and this means only one thing, packing up our gear and marching off into the surrounding wilderness to sleep fully clothed, sans judgement, and eat our bodyweight in camp fire cooked cuisine under the pretence that the weight will keep us warm.
With not a soul to be found but yourself, and those you brought with you, and the Mother offering a private view of the crispest clearest sky in all the seasons. Winter camping never ceases to give us what we seek when we head out there.
The art of keeping warm. This is how you really test your gear, your hacks, your tips and tricks. This is how you prove yourself, earn those anecdotes; or dare we say it, the right to brag. The weather outside could snap the backside off a Woolly Mammoth but you are toastier than a Pizza Pocket, fresh from the Jaffle Iron. Until of course, it’s time to pee.
Silence; true, unadulterated, HD, hear-your-own-heart-beating-in-your-chest silence, the good stuff, all yours. Permeated in the evening perhaps by the steady crackle of the camp fire and the frostbitten earth beneath your feet.
Of course, Winter camping comes with it’s own set of rules, it's pros, cons, loves, hates and wonderful surprises. So for this season we’ll help you navigate this path as best we can we here at Clunes, with our favourite products to keep you warm, dry and satisfied.
The Rumpl Puffy Blanket
240g 3D Hollow Fiber synthetic insulation; comfortable to 4ºC, keep the chills at bay. Present yourself to those you love as a floating worry-free face with an expression of cosmic bliss, and become your own burrito. Complete with a radiant, piping hot filling (you)!
Garnish that Burrito (stretching this metaphor, sorry) and keep those feet double toasty with locally made merino wool socks. These beauties are traditionally crafted and hand finished from The Lindner Family in New South Wales.
Packing down to the size of a sandwich bag and weighing in at only 92g (leaving more room for high carb snacks, naturally), all while producing a whopping 300 lumens; the SiteLightXL from BioLite shines a light on what you need, as the days are only short. Powering itself via USB and featuring a 5m cord length, allow another orb to illuminate you just in case those clouds come rolling in.
Made of waterproof SilNylon and weighing an impressive 305g, this ultra lightweight and extra handy tarp will keep the unpredictabilities of winter weather from touching your beautiful gear and even more beautiful face. Handmade here in Australia by Terra Rosa Gear,
look no further for something you can rely on when it gets a little wet out.
Let’s be honest, they need no introduction. Paired with our Lindner socks, those toes of yours are staying warm and dry despite what’s outside.
The reinforced, double stitched and fully sealed seams of our Ultra-Sil Dry Sacks gives you the confidence to take your nearest and dearest electronics, clothes and down gear into more temperamental terrain. With the 13L sack weighing only 40g, it costs nothing to be safe and you won’t be sorry.
As you well know, tea and coffee becomes the backbone of any outdoor adventure. When the temperature drops, warming yourself from the inside out is imperative. Plus, how else does one reward themselves after setting up the tent, collecting firewood and finding a suitable rock to perch on? Primus has made the perfect little kettle, ultra-light and with a foldable handle, you’ll never need to find another caffeine enabling friend.
Essential Pot Sets
Coming in either 1.3L or 2.3L, Primus does it again with these cooking sets consisting of two lightweight pots, a non-stick saucepan and handle. A durable trio that can handle any and all of your hearty and wonderful winter meals.
The closest thing you're going to get to your Nonna's spag bol while tramping around the great outdoors. Strive Food makes amazingly delicious, high quality freeze dried meals. Put aside the baked beans and sausages for one trip (although, they're pretty damn delicious too) and dig into these hearty, homemade dishes.
So if you’re thinking about venturing out for the first time or are a seasoned pro, we hope we’ve inspired you to pardon yourself, pack up and pitch up this winter.
